John-Tweddle-MOCA-GA

MOCA GA

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia holds two John Tweddle pieces in their permanent collection. One is the untitled painting above, completed in 1961. The other is a sculpture from 1988 titled “Artist Studio” and can be viewed here.

Tweddle drew liberally from the “low art” traditions of cartoons and comic books while mounting an intellectually rigorous exploration of capitalism, iconography and the counterculture revolution. John Tweddle creates artworks exploring ideas of class, his identity as a Southerner, and his era’s culture, commonly depicting naked women, trucks, and peace signs. Strongly colored and patterned with recurring motifs like dollar signs and crosshatching are characteristic of Tweddle’s folkloric, naïve paintings.
